Aperture llega con una sensación de novedad para The Head and the Heart. Por un lado, es su primer lanzamiento desde que firmó con Verve Forecast, uniéndose a otros talentos folk y americanos como Madison Cunningham y Joy Oladokun. Pero quizás más importante, el proyecto es el primer álbum completamente autoproducido de la banda, y su primero con un nuevo estilo de composición. Cada miembro de la banda aportó algo diferente al proceso, probando nuevos papeles y centrando a Aperture como el trabajo de una banda, no solo un compositor y sus instrumentistas.
Esto es evidente en «After the Setting Sun», que inicia el álbum de 12 pistas con majestuosidad cargada de armonía y folk casero. Hay una marcada indiferencia hacia un sonido orientado a la perfección, que deja que la crudeza de sus voces arremolinadas brille. E incluso con algunos elementos más nuevos en la mezcla, la voz dolorida y expresiva de Jonathan Russell sigue siendo el centro; su actuación en la pista recuerda los primeros días hambrientos de la banda, al tiempo que tiene suficiente poder y determinación para llevar a The Head and the Heart a esta nueva era intrigante.
Para apoyar el álbum, The Head and the Heart han anunciado una larga gira que comenzará el 31 de mayo en Detroit.
